Akash Air Missile Defense System

Akash(mean "sky") is a medium Range surface to air missile defense system developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for missile system, Bharat Electronics (BEL), Tata Power strategic Engineers Division and Larsen & Tourbo for other radars, control centers, launcher system in India. The Missile system can target aircraft up to 30km away at altitudes up 18km. It has the capability to neutralize aerial target. The system provides air defense missile coverage for an area of 2000km². The Indian military's combined orders of the Akash including radar system (WLR and surveillance) have a total worth US$4 billion.
                   
The first test flight of Akash missile was conducted in 1990 with development flights up to March 1997. The Indian Air Force has deployed Akash air it bases in Gwalior, Jalpaiguri, Tezpur, Jorhat, Pune it was also reported in the media that Malaysia, Thailand, Belarus and Vietnam have shown interest in purchasing the Akash missile system.
