This is India's first indigenous anti- radiation missile developed by DRDO. Indian Air force was tested successfully at ITR Balasore. Rudram 1 India's new generation anti radiation missile is integrated with Sukhoi -30 MKI. It was successfully tested fired from a Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter jet. While the system has been tested from a Sukhoi 30 MKI, It can be adapted from other fighter jets too.
What is an Anti-Radiation Missile ?
Anti- radiation missile are designed to detect, track and neutralize the adversary readers communication assets and other radio frequency source which are generally part of their Air defence system.
Special Things
once the Rudram missile locks on the target it is capable of striking accurately even if the radiation source switch off in between.
Rudram is an air- to -surface missile design and developed by DRDO. DRDO initiated development of anti- radiation missile of this type around 8 year ago. And its integration with fighter jet has been a collaborative great efforts of various DRDO facility and formation with the IAF and Hindustan aeronautical Ltd. Rudram is a Sanskrit words which mean " Remover of Sorrows "
Range of Missile
Missile has an operational range of more than 100 km. However its range depend on the height at which the fighter jet is flying it can be launched from a height from 500 metres to 15 km and can hit a radiation emitting targets within a range of 250 km.
Speed of Rudram Missile is Mach 2(means twice the sound of speed)
Why is such a Missile Significant?
Rudram has been developed for the IAF's requirement to enhance is its suppression of enemy air defence (SEAD) capability.
Neutralizing or disrupting the operation of the advisories early warning radar, command and control system, surveillance system that use radio frequency and give inputs for anti aircraft weaponry, can be crucial.
